Dhammayietra for Friendship and Harmony between Cambodian and Thai

Cambodian and Thai Buddhists and those who are concerning about harmony between Cambodian and Thai joined to celebrate the Buddha’s Day (Visakha Puja) by conducting Dhammayietras and ceremonies in order to cultivate peace and harmony between Cambodian and Thai and to pay gratitude to the Buddha who showed the way to peace and to remind people about Dhammic practice. The walk also call the world to give up the violent culture to peaceful culture.

At least there were 500 people participated totally. The Dhammayietras started separately in Cambodia and Thailand and finally ended at Wat Mai Thong in Aranh Prathet, Sakeo province in Thailand. At Cambodian side, the walk started at Wat Chansi Samki Rotanaram, Kob commune, Aurchrov district and stopped over at Wat Chen Wan Seimaram (Wat Mong Chen) in Sankha Poilpet, Poilpet city, where they celebrated the last Visakha Puja and Dhammic/Peace talks before their representatives continue to match with Thai group at the white zone of Poilpet International Entry and walked toward Wat Mai Thong together. The temperature was 40 decree but people still remained peaceful and finished their plan. By the end of the Dhammayietra, most of the people requested to have more Dhammayietras, at least one a year. It should be noticed that it is the first Dhammayietra since Cambodia and Thailand have been in conflict. Therefore, people were very happy to see it and seemed received a lot of support from people including local authorities. Please have a watch the video of the Dhammayietra for detail.

BKSN has seen the conflict between Cambodia and Thailand resulting physical and spiritual suffering for both peoples. The resolution to the problem is not in accordance to Buddhist Dhamma or even international legal best practices. Having seen this, BKSN, in collaboration with the People Empowerment Foundation (PEF) in Thailand, we have created a project called Khmer-Thai People Relationship Building (KTPR) since 2009, in order to contribute to improve the situation by promoting Dhamma practices and people center approaches. Cambodian Buddhists pray for Japanese Brothers and Sisters

On 15 March 2554/2011, BKSN led to organize a Buddhist Ceremony in order to share merit to the victims and pray for peace for Japanese people affected by the fearful and devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. We were able to collect $449 to contribute to reduce difficulties of Japanese friends and it was directly donated to a Counselor of the Embassy of Japan in Cambodia Mr. Tatsuya Machida who presided over during the ceremony. On the same time, BKSN also handed a Condolence Letter to Japanese People and their Government of Japan.

9 members of the BKSN including Ms. Oddam Vansyvorn, a Nobel Peace Prize, from Dhammayietra, participated in the 20th Anniversary of the INEB in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from 12 to 17 November, at Suan Dok Temple and Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University (Chiangmai campus in Suan Dok Temple), on Peace and Social Transformation. The team was led by Ubasak Sotha Ros, the Representative of the BKSN and financed by AFSC in Cambodia and a Buddhist friend in South Korea. During the conference, we were able to share about Buddhists and Economic Development of the Mlup Preah Thor in Cambodia, Peace Making of Dhammayietra in Cambodia, participate in a committed working group on Buddhist Economic Development, discuss among our Khmer Buddhists on challenges and solutions in supporting our clients, learn different best practices on social and economical engaged Buddhism from around the world, involve in collecting medicines from Thai Buddhists for the poor with international monks, participate in a peace walk in Chiang Mai city, visit a few Buddhist communities in Chiang Mai and build networks and relationship with foreign Buddhists and Thai Buddhists including Khmer Thais. It was a great opportunity for the participants who have never experienced in international travel and meeting different Buddhist traditions around the world. In addition, we have initiated peace building between the Thai and the Cambodian through Thai Buddhists and Khmer Buddhists, especially with an organization called People’s Empowerment Foundation.

The participants very impressed about promoting youths of Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia, the USA and Thailand in spiritual and peace building, many people concerning and talking about peace, mainstreaming Buddhism in economical and social life, Thai Buddhists in helping the poor and vulnerable, Thai monks and social work and good environmental preservation in Thai Buddhist communities.
